![]() ![]() ![]() 1, 8, 9 Early play helps to prepare infants and young children to learn in school. 1, 2, 7 Play is common to all infants, and it is a primary arena within which domain-specific and global aspects of development occur. Play fosters both motor and cognitive development. 5 In this systematic review, play is defined as a pleasurable, active, self-motivated developmental phenomenon 1, 6 by which infants and young children learn about the world through interactions with objects and people. 1 – 4 Play has been variably defined in the literature given different disciplines and reasons for assessing development through play. Play provides infants and young children with the ability to practice skills and support all domains of development: motor, cognitive, social-emotional, communication, and adaptive. Psychometric properties should be considered for each play-based assessment before it is used in clinical and research practice. Conclusions Play-based assessments have potential to be reliable and valid tools to assess cognitive and motor skills, but higher-quality research is needed. ![]()
